Marco Pierre White called it the best pizza he has ever had in his life.

We didn't invite him. There was no press call, no heads-up to the kitchen. Marco Pierre White just turned up at Forbici Manchester on Cross Street, sat down and ordered.

For context: Marco Pierre White was the first British chef to win three Michelin stars and the youngest person in history to do it. He was born to an Italian mother. He has eaten pizza in Naples, in Rome, at some of the most celebrated tables in the world. He knows what good pizza is and has no reason to be generous about it.

What he did next

He asked for a pen. He signed the menu. Then he wrote a personal note to our pizzaiolo, Davide Argentino - thanking him for what he'd just eaten.

And then, publicly, he said this:

“"The very best pizza I've ever had in my life. Let the pizzas do the talking."”

He mentioned Nancy Silverton of Pizzeria Mozza. He mentioned Mario Batali. He said he'd been all over the world. And he still said Forbici was the best he’d had in his life.
